The Temple Survey Project (NR), Bhopal was established in the year 1955. Shri Krishna Deva was the first Superintending Archaeologist of TSP (NR) Bhopal.

The Archaeological Survey of India formed a noble idea to have some survey projects consisting of Temple Survey Project (North & South) and Building Survey Project. Temple Survey Project specially had been formed with the aim to a systematic and comprehensive study of the architecture of ancient temples. Consequently, two centers of Temple Survey had been founded. One is at Bhopal for northern region and another one is at Chennai for south.

Since its inception, the Temple Survey Project (N.R.), Bhopal has been intensivly involved in temple study of northern region of the country and released various informative notes, books and many vital research articles. Scholars like Krishna Deva, B. L. Nagarch, R.D. Trivedi, Devla Mitra, M.D. Khare , P.K. Trivedi, etc. took exhaustive efforts to brought out various important temples of northern India by describing them along with their photos and drawing illustrations. Still, the students of temple architecture are certainly benefitted by going through the various books, notes and research articles of these great scholars.
